The Carolina Cycling Association, in an effort to recruit, inspire and retain young riders, presents The CCA Junior Development Race Series for Category 4 and 5 racers only. This season long series will offer 12 races beginning on March 14 at the Forest Acres Criterium, near Columbia, SC; ending at the French Broad Classic Omnium in Asheville NC on July 16-18. CCA Junior Developmental Race Series #1: March 14, 2010
The CCA Junior Development Race Series began today at the Forest Acres Criterium in Columbia, SC. The 15-18 race had 12 starters and Julian Patterson of Charlotte, NC took off at the gun to time trial off the front for the entire race. A group of 3 chasers worked all race to bring him back, but Patterson maintained a great rhythm and held it for the win. Charlie Hough of Greenville, SC left the chasers late in the race to try to bridge across, he was closing as the race ended, with Hough soloing for second.
In the 10-14 race, 9 starters were flying from the gun and a group of three led the race from start to finish, with Stephen Ridley , Will Guillen and Holden Hammontree working together to share the work and stay up the road. In the final laps the attacks began, separating Hammontree from the other two who went on to finish Ridley then Guillen. Hammontree kept his head and took a respectable third.
A special shout out to Sally Reamer, Columbia, SC. As the only female racer in the 2 races we applaud here dedication and spirit of adventure. We hope to see more girls racing and eventually having separate fields for them as the numbers grow.
All the racers were energetic and focused. The lads met new competitors who will soon become fast friends as well as rivals. Medals were given in 4 age brackets and also for female racers. Trophies went to the race winners and points were awarded 10 deep towards the season long Championship Title.
Next CCA race will be on April 11, 2010. The Winthrop Farm Criterium in Rock Hill SC. Go to www.ncsccyclingassoc for a full calendar of the CCA Series and other recommended Junior races.

The 2nd race in the CCA Junior Development Race Series was held at the Winthrop Farms Criterium, part of the Rock Hill Classic Omnium. Racers arrived before sunrise to ready themselves for a 7:15 Start. Eight 10-14 competitors lined up and they went from the gun with Stephen Ridley, Grayson Brookshire and Jordon Marhanka getting a gap in the first lap that would decide the race for that category. A drew of younger lads formed their own group and they worked at keeping the paceup. At the Finish it would be Ridley (for two in a row in the series) taking Brookshire in a two up sprint by a bike length, then Marhanka soloing in for third. Solid racing!
The 15-18 field was 14 strong. As expected Julian Patterson attacked early and time trialed away getting a gap of up to 15 seconds, before the field reorganized and brought him back. Several other attacks attempted to break the field, but it was coming down to a field sprint. Attacking from the last corner, with 400 meters to go, Patterson let fly with another powerful surge and he got the gap he needed to make it his second consecutive victory in the series.
Sally Reamer is to be commended. She is going to race the boys until we can find other girls tough enough to race. We applaud her courage and commitment.
Important! We did have a rollout violation that resulted in the relegation of an athlete. (That means scored last; a little better than DQ’d.) This was caused by having a wheel with too big a gear on the bike rather than the restricted gear required for any races Juniors enter, including category races.
Typical gear maximums are 45x12, 52x14, or 53x15. Check with a bike shop mechanic or experienced rider friend to help you get the right gear. Gears can be adjusted to not be used (Blocked Gears) for all regional races, but at Nationals and big races you will need the right gearing.
The next CCA Junior Race Series race is this Saturday at I’on Village in Charleston, SC. Race is at 8:00 AM. Sunday also has a junior State Championship Race that all categories may enter. We’ll see you there!

The CCA Junior Development Race Series continued on April 17, 2010 at the I'on Village Smackdown, in beautiful Mount Pleasant, NC. The fields are growing and the racing continues to be from the gun.
Julian Patterson has won his third 15-18 contest in as many starts and has a commanding lead in the older division. Newcomer to the series, Jack Felix took second with Paul Price right there for third place in a hotly contested sprint. The races are becoming more tactical as riders work together to chase and try to contain the awesome TT abilities of Patterson.
The 10-14 race was a fast paced contest with a head to head sprint between Stephen Ridley and Bradley Garrett. A photo finish, it was determined that Ridley took the gold. All the riders have improved their race craft in just a few weeks and the series will continue to develop tactical skills.
Salley Reamer, looking for a contest with her peers skipped the 10-14 and instead raced in the Women’s cat 4 race, where she got a taste of pack racing. Newcomers to the series, Isabella Brookshire and Abigail Bush showed us that there are girls with the need for speed. We are hopeful that we will see more girls in these races as the season progresses.
All the racers were treated to an airshow by the Blue Angels in the Afternoon. It was almost as exciting as the bicycle races!
Next CCA Junior Race is at Sanford, NC this coming Sunday, April 25th at 9:00 AM.

April 25th found us in Sanford, NC for the 4th race in the CCA Junior Development Race Series. The turnout was a bit disappointing probably due to the threat of horrible wet weather, but by race time the roads were dry and the only weather factor was wind. The 10-14 race saw the return of William and Luis Guillen to the series. These brothers race for the Raleigh All-stars and are developing into solid racers. William took off at the gun and only Holden Hammontree could hold his wheel, and eventually even he had to fade from the relentless pace of William Guillen. William lapped all the riders and when he went by his brother Luis, it looked like Luis might be brought back to challenged Holden for second place, but the brothers ran out of race and the Finish order was William 1st, Holden Second and Luis third. We welcome Trey Leach, Aiden Pounder, and Daniel Pickard to the series and encourage them to continue these races in this Development Series.
The 15-18 race found Jason Marshall (Blood Sweat and Gears) out front alone, but Hank Booth (Bike Depot)and Justin Belcher gave it their all trying to bring him back. That was the finish order; Jason Marshall first, Hank Booth second, and Justin Belcher in Third.

CCA Junior Development Race Series #5: May 2nd, 2010
The setting for race #5 in the CCA Junior Developmental Race Series took place at the Dylan Mitchell Memorial Criterium, In Fort Mill, SC. The weather was clear and Hot! In the 10-14 division Stephen Ridley continues to race off the front and he has a commanding lead in the series. Jordon Marhanka and Holden Hammontree are in a close run for second.
The race series is growing tighter in the 15-18 field as series leader Julian Patterson has pulled himself from the series by upgrading to category 3. Julian is already finishing in the top 5 of these cat 3 races as well as in the open Junior races against the more experienced riders. The overall lead is tightening up between Charlie Hough, Paul Price and Justin Belcher. Newcomer to the series, Jason Marshall has won his last two events and is also a threat as the season is halfway through its schedule.

The Dragon’s Challenge Time Trial was the setting for the 6th race in the CCA Junior Development Race Series. William Guillen from the Raleigh All Stars set the pace for not only his 10-14 division, but for all the juniors 15-18 as well. William and his brother Luis have been racing for three years and they are starting to see the results of hard work. The TT was 9 miles for the Juniors with an out and back format. The race weekend was run by the Cross Creek Cycling Club, and all went well throughout the weekend thanks to the attention to detail provided by Robert Havens, race director. The weather was perfect for the event and everyone enjoyed the day.

CCA Junior Development Race Series #7: May 31, 2010
Memorial Day was the time and downtown Fayetteville was the place for the running of the Patriot’s Criterium. The back of the course was repaved and there were not mishaps throughout the race day, attesting to the courses’ safety. William Guillen again asserted himself as a force to be considered in any 10-14 contest on bicycles. Holden Hammontree, gamely raced away with William and Luis was not far back for third place.
In the 15-18 Mitchell Moody went from the gun and time trialed throughout the race to finish alone.
Next CCA Series race is on Sunday June 13, at the City Park Criterium in Salisbury NC. Don’t forget the NC State Championships for all Juniors on June 12 at the downtown Salisbury crit.
The standings are getting closer on the Points totals and it looks like it will come down to the races to be held in Asheville on July 16, 17 and 18, 2010. Each of those races will be scored separately, so there are lots of points out there for the taking.

CCA Junior Development Race Series #8, June 14, 2010
The City Park Criterium in Salisbury, NC was the setting for race #8 of the CCA Series. Always a great race setting, the weather was brutally hot and humid. This race followed the NC State Criterium Championships held in Downtown Salisbury on Friday night and Saturday.
The 10-14 race has developed into a close competition between Holden Hammontree, and William Guillen. William continued to show how hard he has worked with his victory in the 10-14 right after he won the cat 5 race in a field sprint. Holden continues to improve his tactical racing and Luis Guillen the younger brother of William took third.
In the 14-18 race Mitchell Moody almost took it at the line, but Matthew Bruner held him off with a great head to head sprint. Edward Couvillion took third place.
The Series finale will be held at The French Broad Classic in Asheville, NC on July 16-18. These will be scored as three separate races, giving some of the riders who have missed some of the races, a chance to climb up the standings. Trophies will be awarded for the overall Champions at the Criterium in Brevard on Sunday June 18.

CCA Junior Development Race Series #9, July 16, 2010
The final three races in the CCA Junior Race Series were held at the French Broad Omnium in Asheville, NC on July 16-18. All the youngsters performed well, but the standout of the series had to be Grayson Brookshire. Grayson won the Criterium and Road race and was 3rd in the TT.
The series was a success in bringing safe racing down to the novice youngsters, offering them races with their peers. Hopefully this program will expand in the future and the fields will expand as well.
